The Hitchhiker
The back of her shirt says: Moses Lake Air Base, Washington. Moses Lake Army Air Base opened on November 24, 1942 as a WWII training center, was used through the 40s, and was renamed "Larson Air Force Base" in 1950. It closed as a military installation in 1966 and is now Grant County International Airport. We assume this photo was taken in the 1940s, but it could also be an old shirt.
So, is she headed to the base, away from the base, or neither? Why are her pants shredded? Why is she hitchhiking where there is no road? We don't know the answers, but we still love this photograph.
